“We know what’s wrong, but we just don’t know how to fix it.”

When you’ve been together for years, it’s easy to think you have it somewhat figured out. “After all these years, we should know each other well enough to dig ourselves out of this rut, right?”

In an ideal world, the butterflies you felt ten or fifteen years ago are still fluttering in your stomach. You’re hanging on to their every word with stars in your eyes, and your dreamboat can do no wrong. You can’t wait for the workday to end so you can see them again because the passion sparks up as soon as you lay eyes on your lover.

But, record scratch—things are not quite this way in your relationship.

If anything, the fluttering in your gut is anxiety. Life has taken over, and your relationship has taken a back seat.

When conversations about dreams together turn into talks about finances and caring for your aging parents, the stars in your eyes can dim.

It’s not that you’re ungrateful for your partner and the relationship that you share. Something is just pulling at you (or both of you). If you only knew how to fan the small flame that’s still there to rekindle the passion that you once had.

MEET LINDA AND KEITH

“When I met Keith, he was a ‘breath of fresh air.’ I have a type-A personality, so I found his free-spirited demeanor refreshing. It was fun then. Spontaneous dates and last-minute trips had me falling head over heels.

Keith was never good with money. I always reminded him to balance his checkbook after dinner dates. It was our inside joke to ‘balance before bed.’ When we were out with friends, I would whisper ‘BBB,’ and we would have a private laugh.

Fast forward 15 years, add a mortgage, student loans, and kids, his impulsive antics feel smothering. I must always remind him about important family activities and to pay the bills. After our cell phones were turned off for the second time, I’ve added managing the household budget to my already full plate. Between my 9 to 5, taking care of the kids, managing my parents’ affairs, and now our bills, I’m wiped out. At the end of most days, the last thing I want to do is make love to my husband.”
